Fair Game is a title of the 2023 Yale Photography MFA thesis show and book featuring work by Davion Alston, Hobbes Ginsberg, Arielle Gray, Natalie Ivis, Sydney Mieko King, Xi Li, Adrian Martinez Chavez, Miraj Patel, Shaun Pierson, and Sophie Schwartz.
The cover’s volume is achieved by inserting the first and last 40 pages into a protective plastic sleeve, which also divides the book into three sections.
The first 40 pages feature photographs that were not included in the final selection. The designers chose two images from each author and arranged them into a sequence, serving as a prologue to the main photo essay.
For the main section, the class of 2023 chose to blur the lines between their individual works and those of their cohort, forgoing clear boundaries.
Each photographer allowed their classmates to crossfade into their portfolios on either end of their sequences, omitted the clarity of author names and titles, and allowed the work they created over the last two years to weave into each other's, just as they'd allowed one another to move through their own studios, their photographs, and their lives.
The third section contains the index and essays by commissioned writers, centered around the topic Fair Game.
