Justin Smith asked me if I would be interested in making the first edition of Shade Zine from a visual archive he and Walter Woodington had compiled over the years, after bonding over this topic back in 2021. I agreed. The folder I received contained roughly 240 images: photos, screenshots, scans, and other found materials.
I enjoyed diving into what was, for me, a relatively new subject. As I began organizing this impressive collection, I soon developed a deeper interest in the theme and expressed my wish to expand the archive with my own findings. This proposition was welcomed. And so, after an intense trawl through the internet, the hunt finally came to a halt – landing at a substantial total of 736 pages and 862 linked images, through which I believe our story can be conveyed.
One might suggest that this content could be split into multiple zines. We thought about it. And we still might.
With that written, if you have photographs, references, or any other relevant materials or resources that could further enrich the story, please don’t hesitate to share them with us. We’ll gladly take a look, reflect on them, and if they resonate, consider including them in future print runs.
